SWU’s education administration program nationally recognized

01.30.15 | Education

The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) recognized Southern Wesleyan University’s master of education in administration and supervision (MEDAS) degree program.

The Education Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC) under the umbrella of CAEP (formerly NCATE) granted national recognition without conditions to Southern Wesleyan University’s MEDAS program for the Central campus and the university’s four learning centers: Columbia, Charleston, Greenville and North Augusta.

Sandra McLendon, dean of Southern Wesleyan’s School of Education, expressed appreciation to Lisa Hall-Hyman, Keith East, Mona Thornton and Alisha Thompson for their assistance in preparing the five reports. McLendon added, “This accomplishment is a testimony to all the hard work from all the School of Education and content area faculty.”

National Recognition assures that the education program has met rigorous standards and has learning outcomes with data for program improvement. National Recognition without conditions has been granted from the Specialized Professional Areas to English Education, Math Education, Physical Education, Administration and Supervision, Special Education, Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education. The National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) has accredited Southern Wesleyan’s Music Education program as well as the other music majors. Secondary Social Studies Education was offered for the first time in the 2014-15 academic year; this program will submit a report for National Recognition after the first Secondary Social Studies students have graduated.

“This is an amazing achievement to have all our certification education majors nationally recognized,” McLendon said. “Graduates from these accredited programs have an advantage when seeking employment or when applying for admission to graduate programs.”
