If you’re applying as a freshman international student, you will need:

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent. Official transcripts of all foreign academic work, evaluated by a NACES (National Association of Credential Evaluation Services) association member. Click for a list of association members.
  • A GPA of 2.3 converted on a 4.0 scale, or you must rank in upper half of your graduating class at the time of acceptance.
  • A composite SAT score of 860 or ACT score of 18.
  • IELTS or TOEFL score if English is not your first/native language.

If you’re applying as a transfer international student, you will need:

  • An official college transcript. Official transcripts of all foreign academic work, evaluated by a NACES (National Association of Credential Evaluation Services) association member. Click for a list of association members.
  • A GPA of 2.0 converted on a 4.0 scale, or you must rank in upper half of your class at the time of acceptance.
  • IELTS or TOEFL score if English is not your first/native language.

International Student-Athletes

International student-athletes must also complete NCAA eligibility requirements for athletic certification.  A complete list of international student-athlete pre-certification requirements is available on the NCAA website.

A word-for-word, line-by-line certified English translation of all foreign academic work is one of the NCAA pre-certification requirements for student-athlete eligibility.  SWU faculty cannot provide certified English translations. To search for ATA (American Translators Association) certified translators, visit www.atanet.org.

English Competency Testing

We require all applicants whose first/native language is not English to adequately demonstrate English competency as a part of the application process. Students may demonstrate competency by submitting scores from either IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). The scores we require are at minimum:

  • An overall band score of 6.0 for the IELTS
  • A 500 (paper test), 173 (computer test), or 61 (online test) for the TOEFL

Please contact the test center directly where you took the IELTS or TOEFL test and request that your official test scores be sent to the address below. We do not accept unofficial Test Report Forms from students.

To apply:

  • Complete your application (by phone, online, or PDF), and submit it with your non-refundable $25 (U.S.) application fee.
  • Provide 2 recent photographs with your application (optional).
  • Submit an official transcript in English or with translation.
  • Have your official SAT or ACT test score sent to SWU (freshmen only).
    • The ACT school code for Southern Wesleyan University is 3837.
    • The SAT school code for Southern Wesleyan University is 5896.
  • Have your TOEFL or IELTS scores sent to SWU (if English is not your primary language).

Once you’re accepted, you will need to:

  • Complete the Southern Wesleyan University physical examination form (pdf).
  • Submit the housing form (pdf).
  • Register for new student orientation. 
  • Submit a Declaration of Finances form listing scholarships and grants.
  • Provide a deposit equal to first year's expenses.
  • Report to American Consulate and submit your I-20 to obtain a student visa.
  • Arrive at school no later than appointed date on your visa.
  • Show proof of health insurance to Business Office.
