2015-2016 Fine Arts Series at SWU 

LESSONS AND CAROLS – Friday, Dec. 4, 7 p.m.

Always a campus and community favorite, Southern Wesleyan University’s Departments of Music and Spiritual Life combine to present the celebration of Christ’s birth through scripture and song on Friday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m. This event is part of Southern Wesleyan University’s annual Fine Arts Series at Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center on the university’s campus in Central. UPPER REGION HIGH SCHOOL HONOR CHOIR CONCERT – Friday, Jan. 22, 7 p.m.

After rehearsing Thursday evening and all day Friday with SWU’s Director of Choral Activities, Dr. Don R. Campbell, the South Carolina Upper Region Honor Choir will present a program on Jan. 22 highlighting the great work they have done. For more than 200 students, it is the culmination of not only these two days, but also the preparation that has taken place in their own high schools with their choral instructors. The excitement will be evident in the students’ singing. SWU Professor Jane Dill is the accompanist for the choir. GALEN ABDUR-RAZZAQ, JAZZ FLAUTIST – Monday, Feb. 8, 7:30 p.m.

Galen is an extraordinary flautist from Montclair, New Jersey who has performed both domestically and internationally for more than 30 years. A former student of the Berklee College of Music, Boston, Mass., and a graduate of Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J., Galen holds a master’s degree in fine arts and education. He is an arranger, composer, director, educator and writer. Abdur-Razzaq’s keen ability to transform an audience with the smooth, rich sound of his flute leads to the common conclusion that he is indeed a master musician. MUSICA ECCLESIA – Friday, Feb. 19, 7:30 p.m.

Musica Ecclesia is a choir festival that brings together church choirs from the surrounding area on Friday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. It is an opportunity for the singers and congregations to come together to celebrate the unity they have in Jesus Christ. Each choir presents favorite anthems and then joins the other choirs, including the SWU Concert Choir, in singing a closing anthem. SWU WIND ENSEMBLE POPS CONCERT – Monday, Feb. 22, 7:30 p.m.

The success of last year’s Wind Ensemble POPS concert demands a repeat, and the group will answer the call with a wonderful program of movie music, marches, show tunes, and perhaps even some tunes from today’s radio playlist. The program is fast paced, informational and great fun for performers and audience as well. Come enjoy a relaxed evening on the campus. SWU JAZZ INVITATIONAL – Thursday, Feb. 25, 6:30 p.m.

The Sixteenth Annual SWU Jazz Invitational will take place in Newton Hobson with some of the top local jazz bands combining talents for a wonderful night of live jazz. Young students through experienced professional players will play three song sets in this fast moving evening that includes pizza and drinks available along with dinner table seating! Sponsored in part by the SWU Music club, the concert begins at 6:30 and runs until it is over! YOU’RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN – Mar. 11, 7:30 p.m.; Mar. 12, 7:30 p.m.; Mar. 18, 7:30 p.m.;

Come enjoy a night of music as the “Peanuts” gang helps Charlie Brown figure out what it really means to be a good man. Presentation of this Broadway classic will be directed by SWU’s new vocal professor, Heather Haithcock. The musical is part of Southern Wesleyan University’s annual Fine Arts Series and will be held in Folger Auditorium on the university’s campus in Central. SWU JAZZ ENSEMBLE CONCERT – Tuesday, Mar. 29, 7:30 p.m.

The always popular spring concert by the SWU Jazz Ensemble will feature new charts, a bigger band, and tons of fun! One never knows exactly what to expect in these concerts, as soloists may range from SWU’s own Vice President for Student Life on harmonica to a trumpet-playing “banana!” Always a pick up in the bleak midwinter, the jazz band will provide a bright evening of new and old jazz! This event is part of Southern Wesleyan University’s annual Fine Arts Series at Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center on the university’s campus in Central. SEAN ANDERSON, OPERATIC BARITONE – Thursday, Apr. 7, 7:30 p.m.

A native of Akron Ohio, Sean Anderson studied music and voice at the University of Cincinnati – College Conservatory of Music where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degree. After apprenticing at the prestigious San Francisco Opera and Santa Fe Opera companies, he was briefly a member of the cast of Baz Luhrmann’s La Boheme on Broadway before embarking on his solo operatic career. Since then, he has appeared with nearly 20 different companies, including the New York City Opera in the fall of 2007 as the Judge in Margaret Garner. His repertoire list includes dozens of leading roles ranging from Verdi to Mozart to Gilbert & Sullivan, and his magnetic stage presence and powerful voice have won him critical acclaim for both comedy and tragedy. Come listen to an afternoon of inspirational gospel music by some of the area’s finest gospel choirs on Sunday, April 17 from 3 - 6 p.m. The Gospel Extravaganza will be held in the Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center and admission is free. SWU WIND ENSEMBLE CONCERT – Monday, Apr. 18, 7:30 p.m.

A concert of traditional and contemporary wind ensemble music will conclude the instrumental concert year. Guest soloists will present works specifically for the concert band genre and the multiplicity of sound colors will be explored. Sacred literature will be featured along with new works for the ensemble. MASTERWORKS CONCERT – SWU CONCERT CHOIR – Sunday, Apr. 24, 3 p.m.

The SWU Concert Choir, orchestra, and professional soloists, directed by Dr. Don R. Campbell, will be returning to the Newton Hobson stage to perform Mozart’s “Requiem.” This is considered one of the top seven greatest requiems of all time. Left unfinished at the time of his death and completed by a student, it represents Mozart’s mature style using this most solemn yet powerful spiritual text.
