Help fill truck for tornado victims

06.21.13 | Community

Southern Wesleyan University has partnered with the S.C. District of The Wesleyan Church to send a truckload of supplies needed by Oklahoma tornado victims.

A tractor trailer truck will leave Faith Wesleyan Church in Little River (N. Myrtle Beach area) with items for those whose lives and homes were devastated by the recent tornadoes in Oklahoma. The truck will make an Upstate stop at Pickens View Wesleyan Church, located just off S.C. Highway 8, across from Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens.

“We are asking the great friends and neighbors of the Upstate to join SWU alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends as we help fill the truck,” said Joy Bryant, executive director of alumni and constituent relations.

Bryant noted that items needed include: Band-Aids, blankets, baby formula, diapers, flashlights with extra batteries, non-perishable foods, shampoo, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, towels and washcloths, large plastic ice chests, safety masks and glasses, work gloves, shovels, leaf and lawn rakes and tarps.

Also needed are small aluminum lawn chairs for use by relief workers, so they don’t have to sit on the ground when resting.

Bryant added that donations of clothes aren’t needed at this time.

There will be two collection sites during the week of June 24-29:

Pickens View Wesleyan Church, 744 Bethlehem Ridge Rd., Pickens, where hours for collection will be Monday through Friday from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. and Saturday, from 10 a.m. until Noon.

Southern Wesleyan University Dining Commons, 119 Childs Street in Central, where hours of collection will be Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. until Noon.

For details, contact Bryant at (864) 915-7368.
