Renowned concert organist Trenney at SWU Oct. 14
Concert organist Tom Trenney, who has performed nationwide, will be in concert at Southern Wesleyan University in Central Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m.
Known for his engaging improvisations on hymns, submitted themes, silent films, scripture, poetry, and artwork, Tom Trenney became the first organist to be awarded First Prize and Audience Prize in the American Guild of Organists’ (AGO) National Competition in Organ Improvisation in 2006.
Trenney has been featured as performer and teacher at regional and national conventions of the American Guild of Organists, the Organ Historical Society, the Presbyterian Association of Musicians, the National Association of Pastoral Musicians, the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians, the Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts and the Calvin Institute of Worship. His critically-acclaimed recordings, Organa Americana (Pro Organo) and Organ Ovations and Improvisations (Raven), have been featured on American Public Media’s Pipedreams and public radio’s With Heart and Voice.
Trenney has performed at Royce Hall (UCLA), the Schermerhorn Symphony Hall (Nashville), Benaroya Hall (Seattle), Ocean Grove Auditorium (New Jersey), Portland Municipal Auditorium (Maine), Spreckels Organ Pavilion (San Diego), and Verizon Hall at Kimmel Center (Philadelphia). He has also served as organist and clinician at regional and national conventions of the American Guild of Organists, the Organ Historical Society, the Presbyterian Association of Musicians, the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians, National Association of Pastoral Musicians, the Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts and the Calvin Institute of Worship.
The first half of the program will feature some of the great standards of organ repertoire along with several powerful hymn arrangements. After intermission, the mood will lighten as Trenney improvises the score for the famous silent film “One Week,” featuring Buster Keaton.
