The School of Education is reaching out to the community to offer its expertise and support to regional schools and school districts.
BETHLEHEM CHRISTIAN ACADEMY
Dr. Sandra McLendon assisted Bethlehem Christian Academy in Simpsonville, SC in writing a grant request to the state which has been funded at the level of $200,000 per year for four years. The grant is funding after school care for children from a nearby Title I elementary school, as well as three weeks of summer programs.
So far, the partnership has been exceptional, and the School of Education has already provided professional development to Bethlehem Christian’s faculty in the areas of classroom technology, effective teaching strategies, and project-based learning. This semester, Education faculty are scheduled to conduct training on Assessment (Dr. Paul Shotsberger), teaching gifted students (Dr. Fred Woodworth), and instructional technology (Dr. Sandra McLendon).
TEACHER CADETS
Southern Wesleyan is now a partner institution with the Teacher Cadet program in South Carolina. This is a high school-based initiative that introduces students to education as a career, with the hope of motivating them to seek an education degree in college.
CALL ME MISTER
The program aims to recruit and support minority males who have a desire to teach by providing them with financial assistance in the form of scholarships, academic assistance in the form of advising and tutoring, and professional assistance in the form of mentoring and participation in leadership training. Mr. Harvey Choplin, an adjunct instructor, and Ms. Lillie Lewis will act as academic coaches for the program.
