Services offered in the Health Center include:
- Provide first aid
- Provide non-prescription medications
- Perform blood pressure screenings, urinalysis, rapid strep testing rapid influenza testing, and visual screening
- Weight screenings and assistance with weight management
- Free pregnancy screenings
- Pregnancy counseling for both planned and unplanned pregnancies
- Referrals for STD testing and counseling
- Educational Services include: self-care handouts and brochures, monthly e-newsletters for employees and students, presentations for classes on health and wellness topics, and health center bulletin board
- Wellness Week each spring
- Flu Vaccination Clinic each year
- Blood Drive each semester
- Campus Physician in the University Health Center on Wednesday evenings

Lori Herron earned her BSN degree from Clemson University in Clemson. Her experience includes working with a hospital, family practice medicine, and public school nursing.

Dr. Frank Beacham, MD, grew up in the upstate of South Carolina and completed a Family Medicine Residency. He began working with SWU in 2010. He enjoys reading, hiking, and golf. He enjoys working with young adults and helping them strive for a healthy lifestyle and making healthy choices.

What are the required forms for Health Services?
Medical History form that includes immunizations and a copy of the student's medical insurance card.
What immunizations are required for resident students?
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): Proof of two doses, unless you were born before 1957. Dose 1 given at age 12 months of age or later; dose 2 given at age 4-6 or later, and at least one month after the first dose OR laboratory/serologic evidence of immunity
- Tetanus-Diphtheria: Booster with Tdap in the last 10 years
- Meningitis Vaccine: Meningococcal meningitis is an infection of the brain and it’s covering layers. It may cause death or permanent disability. College freshman, especially those who live in residence halls are at moderately great risk for this infection. This form of meningitis passes from person to person by close contact. There is an immunization available that affords substantial protection against this disease. The vaccines available protect for a minimum of 3-5 years. Do I need an appointment to be seen at the Health Center?
You do not need an appointment to be seen by an RN. Walk-ins are taken on a first come, first serve basis except for emergencies. If Nurse Herron is not in the office the receptionist will schedule you an appointment for the next time she will be in the office.
What if I become ill after hours?
Nurse Herron is on call. Contact your RA or RD and they can contact her to determine the best course of action for you to take.
Do you do laboratory procedures or x-rays?
We do not perform x-rays in the Health Center. The campus physician can supply the necessary requisition to have x-rays or lab work taken at Liberty Family Care or a facility of the student’s choosing.
If I am ill, can I obtain medication at the Health Center?
We have many over-the-counter medications that the RNs may dispense. We will give you a 24-hour dose supply. Any prescription given to you by the campus physician will need to be taken to a local pharmacy to be filled. This will be the only cost to you.
Can I receive allergy injections at the Health Center?
At this time, Southern Wesleyan Health Services is unable to offer allergy injections.
