GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Director of Library Services is responsible for the leadership and overall management of library services and collections. The Director is responsible for planning, budgeting, and staffing in support of the academic, instructional and information needs of faculty, students and staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Provide vision, leadership, and advocacy for the role of the library staff, services, and collections in the academic and scholarly life of the University.
  2. Assume leadership for the operation of the library and provision of library services to the entire SWU community.
  3. Assume leadership for all aspects of planning, assessment, and reporting.
  4. Manage operating and collections budgets.
  5. Determine procedures and set policies.
  6. Supervise the library professional, paraprofessional, and student staff.
  7. Supervise the overall development of the library’s print, media, and electronic collections and their maintenance.
  8. Assess quality and effectiveness of programs and services.
  9. Develop and maintain positive relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community.
  10. Implement a clear and concise strategic plan for the library that promotes the mission of the university and library and encourages continuous improvement.
  11. Participate in library consortial planning and implementation, including PASCAL, PAILS, and others.
  12. Work with all university stakeholders to determine resource and service needs including academics, facilities and technology.
  13. Attend workshops and community events as the schedule allows.
  14. Collaborate with library directors at other colleges and universities, as appropriate and useful.
  15. Establish priorities for future library development and seek internal and external partners and funding sources, including grants, to advance the operations of the library.
  16. Attend committee meetings, faculty meetings, Academic Council, Planning Council, and others, as assigned.
  17. Provide reference service, research and information literacy instruction, cataloging, archives, and other services, as needed.
  18. Perform other responsibilities, as assigned.

 QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Master’s in Library or Information Science required; additional graduate degree in an academic discipline desirable. Minimum five years’ experience with increasing administrative responsibilities in an academic library.
  2. Demonstrated expertise with information technology and library systems.
  3. Commitment to higher education at the undergraduate and graduate level.
  4. Service orientation and strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  5. SWU is committed to maximizing the use of technology in its daily operations and in achieving its strategic goals; the ideal candidate will be familiar with integrated database management systems, including reporting, and have a high comfort level with web-based, mobile and PC applications including but not limited to the use of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

 OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  1. Mission and Lifestyle Expectations. The university is a Christian liberal arts institution in the Wesleyan-Holiness theological tradition. In light of SWU’s unapologetically Christ-centered mission, all employees are expected to embrace the university’s Statement of Faith, respect its Wesleyan heritage, and adhere to its lifestyle expectations.
  2. Physical/Environmental Requirements. Visual acuity necessary to do editorial work, proof documents, and manage files. Requires ability to sit for periods of time in an interior office environment. May require infrequent lifting of objects up to 10 pounds, and occasionally items up to 20 pounds. May require infrequent travel or work outside of regular schedule (e.g., to other SWU locations within the state or regionally for conferences/workshops).
  3. Pre-employment Screening. Employment is contingent on the completion a criminal background screening.

SALARY INFORMATION

This is a regular, full-time, exempt position.
