Connor has had the honor of starting both an academic major's program (physical education) and an intercollegiate sports program from their infancies. He served as the initial full-time athletic director until 2007. During that time period, Connor also coached five different intercollegiate sports programs (men's soccer and baseball, women's volleyball, basketball, and softball).

While directing athletics and coaching, Connor also served twenty years in the US Army Reserves after spending two years on active duty prior to coming to SWU. He retired in 1988 with the rank of major.
