PROFILE: | A native of Belton, S.C., Dr. Rocky Nation has always enjoyed spending time outdoors as well as learning and sharing knowledge with others, making a career in biology a natural fit. Nation joined the Southern Wesleyan University Science Faculty in 2002. He holds a B.S. in Biology from Furman University (1992), an M.Ed. in Natural Science Education from Converse College (1997), and a Ph.D. in Zoology from Clemson University (2005). Prior to arriving at SWU, he taught high school and middle school science for eight years. He is currently Professor of Biology and Environmental Studies Program Coordinator. Among other courses, his teaching responsibilities include General Biology, Ecology, Conservation Biology, Environmental Science, Field Biology, Wildlife and Natural Resource Management, and Aquatic and Wetland Biology. Nation serves as a board member for the Foothills Trail Conference and Oconee County Conservation Bank and participates in the Jocassee Gorges Research and Education Working Group through the S.C. Department of Natural Resources. He also participates in a collaborative project involving Clemson University, SWU, and Pickens County Stormwater Partners to promote water quality education and monitoring in South Carolina. In addition to possessing ecological, economic, scientific, educational and aesthetic value, Nation feels strongly that the natural world also has worth for therapeutic and spiritual purposes, and these opportunities to nourish body and soul are equally important reasons for protecting wild places. He has had the privilege of hiking and camping on multiple continents but will always have a preference and profound sense of place for the Southern Blue Ridge Escarpment. The wild, natural areas of this region serve not only as locations for academic and recreational pursuits, but also as places for rest, reflection, and healing. Rocky and his wife Karon live in Seneca with their three children.
