What computer resources will be available to me as a student?
Southern Wesleyan University provides four computer labs. There are also computers available for student use on the first and second floors of Rickman Library. Lab computers are running Windows 7 and have Microsoft Office 2010. All computers are connected to the campus network and Internet browsing is available at all locations. Labs are closed to students during scheduled computer classes. First and Second floor library computers are available for use during normal library hours. Printing is provided as part of your technology fee. Software installation on university owned computers is limited to information technology employees or representatives. Unauthorized software installation including downloading and/or copying will result in disciplinary action.
Will I have access to the Internet and the campus network?
The university provides each resident student a connection to the campus network. Therefore, we have established a recommended computer specifications list. We cannot guarantee that all computers will be successfully connected to the campus network. A 10/100 Ethernet card or wireless card is required. Resident students in Childs Hall will only have wireless access. We strongly recommend recording the serial number, model number and description of all electronic equipment before bringing to campus. The information technology department periodically monitors student’s Internet and campus network activity both in the labs and the resident facilities. Inappropriate use of these resources, as defined in the acceptable use policies, will result in loss of lab privileges, disconnection from the campus network and disciplinary action.
Will I have cable TV service in my room?
Cable TV is provided at no additional cost to each resident and is available in the lobbies of most campus buildings. The university has cable service from FamilyView Cable. Their channel lineup is available here. Some channels that we feel are inappropriate for viewing have been filtered. Students are not permitted to purchase pay-per-view movies or events or in any way change the filtering or delivery of these channels.
What technology-related fees will I pay?
There are basically three technology fees that students are subject to pay.
Technology Fee - The technology fee is assessed to all full-time students at a rate of $100 per semester. Payment of the fee permits enrolled students to freely use technology resources such as software, computer labs, general use computers in the resident halls and library, network resources, network printers, on-line library databases, and other campus technology services and supplies without incurring per use charges. The fee also covers I.T. helpdesk support by Online incident submission or telephone call.
Technology Repair Fee - An optional $50 one-time fee is available as needed to cover the cost of computer repairs. Services included in the cost of the repair fee are: installation of anti-virus, network configuration, *hard drive or RAM replacement/installation, re-installation of the operating system if deemed necessary, and virus removal. We are not responsible for damage to other components unless damage is the result of a technician’s error. Payment of this one-time fee covers a student for the duration of his or her continuous full-time enrollment. Students can pay this fee at the time repair services are needed.
*The purchase of any hardware replacement/upgrades will be the responsibility of the student.
